To avoid all the costly pitfalls and timely frustrations of the web there's a very simple route to gaining website success, you just need to follow it. You can then devote all your time and energy on building a successful business, with a friendly online website assistant making you money 24/7.
I have personally been project managing website developments for over 10 years and made many mistakes along the way. What I've also done is made a point of learning from my mistakes and sharing my experience with our clients websites every step of the way.
Listening to people at recent events has made reminded me of how daunting the World of the web can be to those that are new to this arena. Through my blog, I hope to address the issues faced by small business owners and start ups, looking to take their first steps on the web.
Why should I care about you?
That question can be read it two ways, how will you take it? That's really the point though, people spend on average 0.7 seconds to make a decision online, it needs to be right. Unless you communicate in a clear and succinct manner, you could be sending out the wrong message.
In the coming weeks I'll be writing a number of articles on the key production and growth milestones of a website, but for now we'll stick to the 7 step strategy.
7 steps to guaranteed website success and creative website freedom.
Being a project manager you see it from a number different angles, we all ultimately want to focus on the fun stuff and creative bits, the 'bells n whistles'. However, budgets are tight, you haven't got much time, oh and you've got a business to run. It's a common story.
No matter how big or small every website turns through a very clear and obvious cycle and by discussing the '7 steps to guaranteed website success' process, I can easily gauge the level of pain being suffered and confront your fears head on.
Project creep, is your worst enemy
Before you do anything you should have a rough idea of how much you want to spend on your site per annum. Yes, that's right per annum. Owning a domain name let alone hosting a website requires an ongoing expenditure, my aim is to help you keep the costs to a minimum.
Ultimately, someone is responsible for the deliverables justifying time, cost and value for money. That's been a part of my job for years, having previously said yes to everything and not finishing projects on time, I soon learnt when to say no.
A website is for life, not just for Christmas.
Your website assistant will need a little attention now and then to have a chance to deliver a reasonable return on your investment. Give it a bit of TLC and you will see your results sky rocket. You don't have to be a Rocket Scientist any more.
One of the first books I ever read stated, 'Content is King'. I've applauded this statement ever since and with the rules of engagement on the web now firmly in the hands of search engines, this now more true than ever. Your content is what people are looking for.
... where do you start?
The best person to sell your business is you and with a learning curve less than editing a Word document, the opportunity to start publishing content live to a website within minutes. You've only got yourself getting in the way of total web domination.
We've worked in close partnership developing web strategies with a number of clients over the years, each in their own way making a success from their website. You must start with a clear goal and objective in mind, which can be broken into mini packets of success.
When did you last review your website strategy?
If the answer to the above is, 'What's that !?@#!!' then you probably need to begin the rules of engagement immediately. Send me some details, I'd be happy to discuss your web frustrations. I'll also include some solutions in future articles to address current trends.
Before I gave away all my top tips willy nilly, without setting the scene and laying the foundations, I thought I should start by building some level of credibility first. Let's face it there's more top 10 lists than you can shake a stick at these days.
So why do I think my ideas are so great?
I hate rolling out websites, conforming to a rigid template. How boring. Over the years we've developed an approach for building websites to make our client's life as simple as possible, with more time and budget available for being creative and pushing boundaries.
I may not have dazzled you with anything new just yet, but if you've read my story this far there must be some connection. Yes, we're a web agency, but by working differently and using tools available we've also become a completely remote business slashing overheads.
If you're really lucky I'll throw in a golden nugget or two.
Yes, there's lot's to learn and loads of stuff to tell but if your ready to begin changing your opinions of the web, stayed tuned because there's lots more to come.
Part Two - to follow soon. I'm sorry, you didn't think it was going to be that easy did you. It's taken years of refinement and will take require careful attention when rolling out our methods to make sure we don't miss a beat.
Thanks for listening, Kevin
