Award-winning wine merchant The Flying Corkscrew hits the internet with new website design - Fine wine merchant The Flying Corkscrew ventures online with a cleverly branded website development as part of a bigger intiative. The Flying Corkscrew's award-winning reputation as a friendly and fun environment in which to enjoy some of the world's finest wines, beers and spirits from around the world needed to be recreated for their first website design.

flyingcorkscrew.com is the first stage of a long-term plan to develop an online retail environment to boost sales and attract new customers.

Their printed catalogue features a suprisingly wide range of wines from independent producers and their commitment to the quality of their products is evident in their strapline: "We love wine. In fact, we only sell wines that we drink ourselves."

Their main goals at this stage with their website were to:

  • establish a prescence for the company online that would show up in search engines
  • introduce online visitors to the company's personality and experience
  • provide a sales route for online visitors
  • investigate the potential market online
  • present their products to web users

The clients existing content consisted of text wine lists, packed with info. Routes into these documents were crafted that would assist 'novice' wine enthusiasts, but retain the specialist knowledge they contained. CUstomers were also presented with clear information about how to buy products and the other services provided by The Flying Corkscrew.

All user paths gave access to a detailed contact us form, which was prepopulated where possible to reflect the user's route of access. The enquiries will generate important sales contacts for a company whose primary method of sale is via telephone or email.

Although the company was not ready to offer online sales, a 'web selections' feature was devised, which created an additional activity for visitors to participate in, a changable feature to encourage repeat visitors, and a mechanism to anticipate future online sales expectations.

The Flying Corkscrew revolves around a highly personal customer-sales experience. The text content of the website reflects this and has been given prominence. The visual design of the website also conveys a warm, welcoming, individual and informal impression. Wood effects were used to add texture and warmth. All of the page elements were presented in a easy to access and readable manner. The company's logo was given prominence - in line this the client's need to establish their brand online.

The Flying Corkscrew brochure website is now live and the client can easily update their own news stories, special offers and other content using our simple browser interface, ensuring that the website is kept fresh and up-to-date. This is easily achieved now that we have trained the client on how to manage their own website using our CMS (Content Management System).
